I just love this book. Al, our POV character is a big, strong, sweet guy who is thick as a plank (maybe two planks) but wise too, and loyal, and devoted to his Mum, and worshipfully in love with Larry, who himself thinks Al is the bees knees and he is equally devoted. Al's narration is so funny and so skillfully done, and the love story is set against a background of academic snobbery and classism, which sets off their differences but doesn't really get in the way of their romance. It's sweet and funny and so good.Obscure movie reference: If you've ever seen "The Ladykillers", an English movie from the 50s with Alec Guiness and Peter Sellers, there's a big, dumb guy as part of the gang who gets fond of and fiercely protective of their landlady, who he calls Mrs. Lopsided. Anyway, I kept hearing this guy's voice as I read, not as Al, but maybe a branch on Al's family tree.
